A reader asked if there were prophets in today’s church, if so what roles do they play in the church, and finally how can we tell if the person is a true prophet of God. Those are some pretty hefty questions and important ones; so let’s take a look at what we know.

Are there prophets today and what roles do/did they play in the church?

It is possible that God could grant anyone today the gift of prophecy; He is God and can do whatever He deems needed for mankind. With that being said, it is very unlikely that He does so though. Why? The gift of prophecy was the best way for God to tell us what to look for in the coming of Jesus Christ and the formation of the early church. By giving us the prophecies in the Old Testament, He laid out the guiding framework of what to look for in His son Jesus Christ. Without that knowledge, we would not have been able to recognize that Jesus was exactly who He claimed to be; the living son of God. (more…)

Yesterday, we spoke about the Gospel of Mary, a Gnostic Gospel that was found in the town of Nag Hammadi with a large collection of early Gnostic writings. This place then became known as the Nag Hammadi Library. In both that post of the Gospel of Mary and the couple of sentences above, I have used the word ‘Gnostic’ repeatedly. I had a reader ask me what ‘Gnostic’ is and what makes it different than the Gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John? (more…)

I have mentioned a time or two that I shop at Barnes & Noble for my book purchases. So today at lunch, while running my errands, I passed by a B&N and decided to drop in and pick up Tolle’s A New Earth. I agree with the comment that gracieguru posted; you should have read a book if you are going to call it trash. So I stopped in and went to the Christian section. I searched the alphabetical stacks and found the T’s. Looking down the rows I ran through the letters….T…..TO….TOL…..TOLL….Hmmm no Tolle found. So I went up to the information desk and ask the lady there. She knew the book and came out of the little circular information desk to lead me to my book.

Question: “What is the “church of Oprah”? Is Eckhart Tolle’s “New Earth” compatible with Christianity?”

Answer: Oprah Winfrey is arguably one of the most influential women in the world. With a daily viewership that has peaked at around 10 million, the Oprah Winfrey Show definitely has the potential to impact the lives of many people. The Oprah Winfrey Show definitely promotes much that is good. However, there is another side of Oprah that has only recently become an integral part of her show—and that is her rejection of biblical Christianity. Oprah has made statements on her show in the past that have given a small glimpse into her personal spiritual beliefs, speaking mostly about her belief that there are many ways, millions even, for a person to “get to what some call God.”

The modern world is a strange place for Christians at times. Just look at the social standard of the two things you should never discuss with someone you don’t know. You know what they are! We all do because, that is how our modern politically correct world has molded us! The most taboo subjects on the planet are politics and religion. This has been burned into your brain by the world around us. This is true just as ‘talk about the weather’ is the first subject you will breach with a stranger. Now I am not saying this needs to change wholeheartedly, but discussing your faith should not be taboo. The Bible tells us that we should spread the word of Jesus Christ…even in the face of the modern world. For me this is hard to do.

In the video following the jump you will see a clip posted on GodTube that clearly shows that Oprah does not believe that Jesus is the only way to reach Heaven which is clearly what John 14:6 teaches us. So can she actually call herself a Christian?

I think this is where many people fail and jsut take parts of the Bible and leave what they do not want to use or hear. This is not Christian beliefs. This is their own made up version and it does not hold water.

The transcript is from me typing as I listened to it, so I am sure it will contain errors. =0)

New Earth Book CoverI have been quite busy as of late, but there is one issue that I feel is dire enough that I have to come back and just call it as I see it. Oprah Winfrey has flipped her lid!

I am not an Oprah fan. I think, or should I say thought, that she had a good heart, called herself a Christian, and actually tried to help people when she could. So I was rather unaware of her crusade to bring the human race to a higher state of consciousness. A co-worker brought this to my attention.

harry-potter-cover.jpgLet’s start of the week on the subject of Harry Potter. I will say up front that I am pro-Potter; but I fully understand and respect people’s right to not want to read it. The debate starts on how you define the books. The fans of Potter claim it to be nothing more than a good tale and that is it. Those against the books feel the books are filled with witchcraft and try to teach it to children; which the Bible is very much against. I think it may be easier to just jump right in and take a look at both sides:

Witchcraft

One of the biggest verses that fuel this side of the fight is Deuteronomy 18:9-14(NIV):

I am slammed at work today with an issue that has come up; so today’s Tough Questions will come directly from GotQuestions.org:

got-questions.jpg The first of the Dead Sea Scroll discoveries occurred in 1947 in Qumran, a village situated about twenty miles east of Jerusalem on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. A young Bedouin shepherd, following a goat that had gone astray, tossed a rock into one of the caves along the seacliffs and heard a cracking sound: the rock had hit a ceramic pot containing leather and papyrus scrolls that were later determined to be nearly twenty centuries old. Ten years and many searches later, eleven caves around the Dead Sea were found to contain tens of thousands of scroll fragments dating from the third century B.C. to A.D. 68 and representing an estimated eight hundred separate works.

The Dead Sea Scrolls comprise a vast collection of Jewish documents written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and encompassing many subjects and literary styles. They include manuscripts or fragments of every book in the Hebrew Bible except the Book of Esther, all of them created nearly one thousand years earlier than any previously known biblical manuscripts. The scrolls also contain the earliest existing biblical commentary, on the Book of Habakkuk, and many other writings, among them religious works pertaining to Jewish sects of the time

The legends of what was contained in the Dead Sea Scrolls are far beyond what was actually there. There were no lost books of the Bible or other literature that there was not already other copies of. The vast majority of the Dead Sea Scrolls were simply copies of books of the Old Testament from 250-150 B.C. A copy or portion of nearly every Old Testament book was found in Qumran. There were extra-biblical and apocryphal books found as well, but again, the vast majority of the scrolls were copies of the Hebrew Old Testament. The Dead Sea Scrolls were such an amazing discovery in that the scrolls were in excellent condition and had remained hidden for so long (over 2000 years). The Dead Sea Scrolls can also give us confidence in the reliability of the Old Testament manuscripts since there were minimal differences between the manuscripts that had previously been discovered and those that were found in Qumran. Clearly this is a testament to the way God has preserved His Word down through the centuries, protecting it from extinction and guarding it against significant error.

bible3.jpg            True is, all we have is an educated guess at when the four gospels were written. None of the manuscripts that have ever been found have “March 13, 0043” on them or any other date that can be placed as when they were written. That opens up a lot of debate as to when they were written and how reliable they could be if they were written much later than expected.

The Gospel of Matthew, for instance, is argued to have been written as early as 40 A.D., a mere handful of years after Jesus’ death, all the way to 140 A.D.  This fact alone shows that there are some differences in opinion in the entire dating process. And your point of view on the dating process and who you talk to will greatly influence your take on when you accept the gospels were written. Many try to push the dates back simply because they want to try to discredit Christianity. This is neither correct nor even sound science.
